Welcome to the Comanche Crossing and Eastern Railroad. We are a 40+ year old 15 inch gauge railroad on the eastern plains of Colorado.
Maybe it would be better to start by saying what we don’t do: the CC&E RR is not open to the public on a regular basis and does not operate any form of scheduled service.
However, we do offer opportunities for special interest groups and charitable organizations to experience the railroad and learn a little bit of the history and lore of the High Plains.
We also schedule volunteer workdays that give interested persons of all ages an opportunity to participate in construction, maintenance, and operation of the railroad. These workdays will be announced through our newsltter, with advanced sign-up opportunities. They usually include planned activities and lunch in the picnic grove.
Friends of the Comanche Crossing & Eastern Railroad (FCCERR) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that exists primarily to carry on the legacy of the 15″ gauge CC&E RR as an educational enterprise dedicated to sharing knowledge of pioneer railroading on Colorado’s Eastern Plains.
The CC&E began nearly 40 years ago as a non-commercial hobby project of the Uhrich and Thain families of Strasburg, CO when Rob and Joanne Thain acquired 20 acres of land east of town. the land provided the perfect place to build a home — and to pursue their passion. Joanne’s father, Virgil Uhrich, already had the train, and now they had a place to build a railroad.
The project inevitably attracted the attention of like-minded individuals, and thanks to their volunteer efforts, the CC&E now boasts over a mile of mainline track with four trestles, a tunnel, a wye, a loop, and two yards. Plus, of course, trains to run on it.
The recent passing of both Rob and Joanne put the future of the project in doubt, but a long-time friend and volunteer purchased the property for a family home, and the FCCERR was created to lease, maintain and operate the railroad.
